The Piano, the Rubik's Cube and Other Ways to Kill Time

posted on 27 December 2010

As I engaged in whimsical reveries of my childhood, I recall the innocent pleasures derived from the toys I received- from educational toys to musical instruments. From a miniature piano that I subsequently broke when I stood atop it to peer through a third story window, to the famous slinky whose metallic rings would inevitably and inexplicably become stretched out beyond repair. As I mulled over and manipulated the Rubik's Cube, I was seldom able to solve the puzzle. It would have been easier and timelier to remove the stickers and rearrange them to achieve six faces of solid colors. Even so, I loved the Cube and was delighted when I recently unearthed a glittering one inside a box of old items. I no longer attempt to solve it, but have placed it atop my computer monitor for nostalgia's sake.In my experience, toys were a gateway to dreaming, an opportunity to develop and enrich my imagination. I occasionally discover myself longing for that magical time of discovery, the magical thrill of play is among the highlights of my early years.
